“Name Tag Not Included”

{Mom}: Mon! Eat more your pants are falling down!
{Ramon}: i forgot my belt mom, and I eat plenty don’t worry :)
{Mom}: And no more pushups!
{Ramon} Why not mom? I need to get conditioned for swimming...?
{Mom}: Because you can’t wear a bra in the pool!
{Ramon}: >>>insert awkward facial expression here<<<

What a fun day to get mom out of the house and just be outside as well as in the company of people that can celebrate her positive persona. Extra pushups aside, of course it’s a transition for us both, but loving on those we love, especially during times of loss, only has the opportunity for connections to become closer. I took mom for a day trip down to Indianapolis to make final arrangements for the upcoming art show as well as to meet some amazing folks doing amazing things at the IU Health Foundation for so many that are touched by cancer each year. The following day, Mom got to partake in a culinary comforts cuisine activity entitled, “a taste of the Mediterranean” where we had a great meal and evidence-based research lecture on why this kind of diet has so many health benefits. And of course she got to pose for a photo op with the two Northwestern Medicine registered dietitians who led the lecture and discussion! And, of course I did some dishes:) What had me keeping the tears back was when we were walking back to the car and mom simply ‘freestyled’ the following phrase, “each day brings a new way to say I love you and I miss you Papa.”

“Hello to that Rainbow”

i’ll make sure to say hello
to that rainbow
for that’s where you’ll be
waiving with that token grin
hoping that i’ll see
a different side
that would hide behind a father’s pride
those unspoken words I never heard
but all the others shared
in conversation with you
family ties broken and repaired
and they knew
how true
your believing in me
was so clear to see
through those storms and cloudy days
hope always found ways
to shine
so I’ll make sure to say hello
to that rainbow
for that’s where you’ll be
waiving with that token grin...

“Destined Displacements”

One of my dreams of being able to create something to serve as a beacon of hope, inspiration & gratefulness is now being realized in the best way... two of my organic mosaics and their respective narratives have been selected to be on display at the IU Simon Cancer Center and then make their way to the Harrison Center in downtown Indianapolis this coming October. “Wayward Spring” and “Concluding Meadows of Yellow” were part of my debut 2017 solo exhibit, “Assemblies of Empathy.” Despite talks of having that exhibit travel to other galleries, I had to shelf that endeavor and focus on my health. Being able to bounce back this year and embrace this opportunity lays the foundation to potentially have my work on display to lift up others in different Comprehensive Cancer Center Hospitals all over the country. Someone half-kidding said this could be great for one of my 17 careers... she’s not wrong :) More info on the upcoming exhibit and this beautiful collaboration to come, so stay tuned :)

“More than Enough”

One of the favorite associations I have to my parents is overhearing their hilarious, beautiful, truly connected conversations about everything and nothing. There could not be two more opposite personalities that were, in every way, perfect for each other. Imagine two immigrants, both from different countries, making their way to an entirely new country, showing up to pursue their advanced degrees with next to nothing. And did they ever have the ultimate argument of arguments whenever us kids would even think about complaining! Some days, Pa would be gone for weeks at a time- pursuing his ambition to one day establish his information integrity software company empire. All mom would ever ask before his departure and upon his arrival was a kiss. I never actually saw what (at the time) seemed to be the most gross of gestures, but I knew they had something that all the money in the world could never purchase... they had each other’s hearts. This candid of the two of them in a barren room was taken a couple years back when I was helping them move out of Ocean Ridge to check out this place called Naples in Florida. Those conversations were in full swing again during this capture, with Pa’s head resting on mom’s lap- the most content man in the world was right there in this moment. And mom knew that all was well because just being in each other’s company was more than enough...
